My Life Plan has Come to Lake Harriet Middle School

My Life Plan is a series of lessons that focus on career and post-secondary exploration and planning. Students will complete milestones (lessons or experiences) starting in 6th grade which help them make informed decisions on post-secondary options.

 

Our 6th grade academic extensions staff along with a district hired counselor will deliver the lessons several times (5 lessons) during the year. The lessons for the 6th graders involve:

·       Learning how to use Naviance, an online program to help students navigate through their post-secondary options. Identifying their personal/social, academic, and career needs.

·       Learning skills to successfully transition to Middle School.

·       Identifying their learning style and learn strategies to assist in their learning.

·       Taking interest inventories to explore careers and post-secondary options.

·       Setting goals and create an academic plan for Middle School.

 

Our 7th graders will complete My Life Plan during their social studies classes. These lessons are a continuation from last year and include:

·       Reintroducing Naviance and My Life Plan. Students also identify their personal/social, academic and career needs.

·       Learning skills to successfully collaborate at school, work and in the community.

·       Learning the connection between income and expenses and how it relates to careers.

·       Creating an educational plan to assist in meeting their education and career goals.

 

Our 8th graders will complete My Life Plan during their Spanish classes. These lessons will include:

·       Learning about My Life Plan and how to use Naviance. Students will also identify their personal/social, academic and career needs.

·       Practicing decision making strategies and learning about their high school choice process.

·       Understanding their EXPLORE test results and how it relates to college readiness, skill proficiencies, college planning, career interests and the importance of rigorous high school course work.

·       Creating a high school course plan.

 

 

In addition, this district counselor may be available for additional counseling support to include: academic support and planning, individual counseling (personal/social, academic, career), post-secondary/career preparation and exploration, EXPLORE test interpretation support and HS transition/choice process support.
