Dear Lake Harriet Families,

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year.  We are very excited by the opportunities awaiting us and look forward to working with you to make this a fun and successful school year.  We want to make sure that everyone is aware of the changes that have taken place and understands the steps we are taking to ensure the legacy of excellence continues at Lake Harriet.

As you probably know by now, the person initially chosen to become the new Upper Campus principal withdrew and was replaced but Walter Schleisman.  Jan Parrish will continue as the principal at the Lower Campus.  Merry Tilleson will continue as Assistant Principal at the Upper Campus.  We are all committed to making sure that we work together to advance the mission and vision of the whole school and deliver and education that is consistent with a K-8 school.  To that end, we have been meeting throughout the summer and will continue to do so during the school year.  

We have heard from parents that you are concerned with the coordination of school functions/calendars and the spirit of the school as a K-8 community school.  All three administrators will work together with our staff and site council to make sure we plan events thoughtfully and carefully.  We will also continue holding events such as coffee and conversation with the principles to make sure we hear your thoughts and concerns.  

With the addition to the Lower Campus building, grade three will now be housed there and grades four - eight will remain at the upper campus.  At both sites, staff and administration will continue to work to deliver the best possible education for all students.  We have heard concerns about advanced learners and differentiation from many parents.  We will continue to work in our buildings to find innovative solutions to ensure we meet the needs of all students.  

Finally, we would like to thank the Lake Harriet School community for your support.  The success of our school would not be possible without the tremendous family involvement that is a part of our tradition.  We look forward to a great year.
