The Lake Harriet Equity & Diversity Committee (a subcommittee of the Site Council) and the Upper Campus Engagement Team are excited to introduce a new Student Leadership model this school year. We have expanded our former Student Council to include a broader range of leadership roles and responsibilities. This is a model based on similar models operating in other Minneapolis and suburban schools where students have an opportunity to work on specific school issues. Students in grades 4-8 were invited to apply to the one of four leadership groups:

  1. Wellness & Environment: Helping our school community “go green” by making choices that are environmentally conscious and personally healthy.

  2. Technology Squad: Supporting the LH Community in all of their technology needs—video, audio, Wi-Fi, sound, and assembly/program support.

  3. Equity & Inclusion: Raising intercultural awareness and eliminating all forms of racism and bias while helping students understand each other’s racial and cultural identity.

  4. Student Ambassadors: Providing community outreach and welcoming new students and families to Lake Harriet (as well as prospective new families).

Students learned about the Student Leadership roles in their homeroom/advisory and were given applications to be signed by parents. Teams of two teachers will lead each leadership group. The teacher advisors will choose two applicants from each grade level for each of the four groups. Thus, there will be 10 students in each group. We will announce the Student Leaders later this month. There will also be opportunities for many other students to be involved in leadership activities throughout the school year, such as planning school dances or community service projects. Lower Campus is working on its own Student Leadership model, which will be shared once it is finalized.
